Referral partner programs

A referral partner program for insurance agents and agencies

A referral partner program for insurance agents lets you introduce commercial-lines and business-owner clients to growth technology and marketing services, and earn a commission when they buy. Random Income handles the sale, delivery and support, and the offers are business services, not insurance products. You work as a 1099 independent contractor, keeping every referral separate from the policies you write.

Commercial clients tell their agent everything

A commercial-lines agent learns more about a business than almost any outside adviser. Renewal season means payroll figures, revenue, headcount, new locations, new vehicles and new risks. You know which contractor just won a bigger job, which restaurant group is opening its third site and which manufacturer is struggling to hire. Life and benefits agents working with owners hear the rest: the buy-sell agreement, the key-person worry, the plan to sell in a few years.

Those conversations surface growth problems constantly. The owner wants more of the right customers, a sales process that does not depend on them, or a way to show up when prospects ask an AI assistant for a recommendation. Until now, the best you could do was suggest a name. An insurance agency referral partner relationship lets you make that introduction formally, disclose it and be paid when it closes.

Every industry is a geek away from being uberized, insurance included. Agents who understand technology and data, and can connect clients to it, become more valuable advisers, not less.

Keep referrals separate from the policy

Insurance is one of the most tightly regulated referral environments, so be conservative. State insurance laws generally restrict sharing commissions on insurance products with unlicensed people and prohibit rebating or offering inducements to buy a policy. Those rules are aimed mainly at insurance transactions, and states differ, so never assume a referral fee is allowed for you. The services you would refer through Random Income are business technology and marketing, not insurance, but the way you present them still matters.

  • Never offer a Random Income service, discount or introduction as an inducement to buy, renew or switch a policy.
  • Make introductions in a separate conversation or email, not inside a quote, proposal or renewal packet.
  • Disclose the referral relationship in writing every time.
  • Check your agency principal's policy, your carrier appointments and any captive agreement before you start; some restrict outside business activity.
  • If a rule is unclear, ask your state insurance department or counsel. This page is general information, not legal advice.

What agency clients actually buy

The best referrals mirror the industries you already insure. A few patterns that come up again and again.

  • Home services, contractors and trades: KeywordCalls, which delivers live high-intent phone calls on the keywords their customers search.
  • Agencies and brokers themselves, including your peers: Predictive Data, which identifies who is in-market and delivers identity append, visitor identification and ZIP-level predictive data into the CRM.
  • Local professional firms and clinics: Quuik, Trusted GPT, which works to get a business cited when people ask AI and answer engines.
  • Owners with a big idea and no tech team: Fast Start, which takes an idea to an MVP in market, and the Big Idea application at jeff-cline.com/idea.
  • Businesses that grow by relationships: contacts.plus Business for trusted referrals and a relationship CRM.

Not another commission-only insurance sales job

Many agents started in commission-only insurance sales, or commission-only life insurance sales, and know exactly what that world looks like: quotas, lead costs, carrier production requirements and a book that needs constant service. Search for commission based insurance sales and you will find plenty of people debating whether the trade-off is worth it.

This is a different model. There is no quota, no lead purchase, no appointment to maintain and no account to service after the sale. You notice a need, make an introduction and step back. Random Income runs discovery, proposals, delivery and support. In your back office you see every click, form and quote request on the referrals you send, so you know when a check-in call is worth making.

The time commitment is small, closer to the 2-hour work week than a second job. For most agents, it is insurance agent side income that comes from conversations they are already having at renewal.

Running referrals from an agency, not just a desk

In most agencies the producer is not the only person who hears what clients need. Account managers and customer service reps field the calls about new vehicles, new hires and new locations. The principal sets policy for the whole shop. If you want referral income to work at agency level, decide a few things up front.

First, the principal should approve the arrangement and decide whether it fits the agency's carrier relationships and its compliance posture. Second, each person who refers should have their own Random Income profile, because every Strategic Partner is an individual 1099 independent contractor with their own W-9 and their own back office. Third, write down the rule everyone follows: business services only, never tied to a policy, always disclosed in writing.

Set up that way, the agency becomes a trusted connector for its commercial book, and the people closest to the client relationship are the ones who make the introductions.

How partners are paid

Strategic Partners are 1099 independent contractors, never employees. On products in our stack you earn a percentage of retail calculated on redline, the price floor: 20% if the client buys entirely online untouched, 12% if an in-house Random Income rep works the deal, and pro-rata to redline if we negotiate the price.

Fast Start ($32,500 a month) and the Joint Venture build ($18,200 a month) pay your percentage only on the monthly SaaS fee actually collected, with no equity or success fee. Investor-funded deals pay a one-time $5,000 referral fee. When a business posts its own offer on Random Income, you earn 50% of what that business pays us.

Payouts arrive on the 21st of the month after Random Income is paid, once your balance reaches $500, by Stripe or PayPal. You upload an ID and a W-9, and we issue a 1099-NEC.

Opening lines that work at renewal

Keep it advisory and keep it apart from the policy discussion. After the renewal is done, a sentence like one of these opens the door without pressure.

You mentioned your phones are quieter this season. There is a service that delivers live calls from people searching for exactly what you do. I have a referral relationship with the company, so I want to mention that. Would you like an introduction?

You said customers keep telling you they found a competitor through an AI app. Do you know whether your business shows up in those answers? I can introduce you to people who work on that.

If the client says no, nothing about the insurance relationship changes, and that should be obvious from the way you ask.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the referral partner program for insurance agents?

It is a way for agents to introduce business-owner clients to growth technology and marketing services in the Random Income network and earn a commission when they buy. The services are not insurance. Random Income handles the sale, delivery and support, and you work as a 1099 independent contractor, keeping referrals separate from any policy you write.

Can insurance agents accept referral fees for non-insurance services?

Possibly, but check before you accept one. Insurance referral and rebating laws mainly govern insurance transactions, yet states differ and some restrict or prohibit referral fees for licensees. Check your state insurance department's rules, your agency principal and your carrier or captive agreements. Never tie a referral to buying or renewing a policy, and always disclose the relationship to the client in writing.

How is this different from commission-only insurance sales?

There is no quota, no lead cost, no carrier production requirement and no book to service. You only refer, and Random Income handles discovery, proposals, delivery and support. Commission is paid when a referred business buys, at 20% of retail on redline for untouched online purchases or 12% when our rep works the deal.

How much time does insurance agent side income from referrals take?

Most agents plan on about two focused hours a week. The opportunities come from renewal reviews and client check-ins you already hold, so the added work is a separate introduction email with a disclosure line and a quick look at your back office to see which referrals have clicked or requested a quote.
