Several companies, one view of the gaps
A fractional C-level executive does a senior job for more than one company at a time, usually on a retainer for a set number of days a month. That is the plain meaning of fractional C-suite: executive judgment without a full-time executive salary. The side effect is pattern recognition. A full-time CMO sees one funnel. A fractional CMO sees four, and notices that all four have the same leak.
That cross-company view is exactly what a referral partner needs. You know which portfolio company is about to raise, which one is replacing its CRM, which owner keeps asking about AI and which sales team is calling cold lists with no signal. When the answer is something in our stack, you can introduce it, let Random Income run the sale, and stay focused on the work you were hired for.
Every industry is a geek away from being uberized, and fractional leaders are often the first people inside a company to say so out loud. Being able to point to a concrete next step, not just a warning, makes that conversation easier.
There is also a timing advantage. Fractional engagements often start at an inflection point: a funding round, a new product line, a sales reset or a founder stepping back from day-to-day operations. Those are the moments when companies buy data, technology and outside expertise, and you are in the room for them.
Commission beside retainers, not in place of them
Fractional executive opportunities are usually measured in retainers, and retainers have a ceiling: there are only so many companies you can serve well. Referral commission is a different line. It does not consume your days, it does not require a new client relationship, and it does not compete with the engagement you already have.
Think of it as a way to be paid for the introductions you already make. Many fractional executives refer bankers, attorneys, recruiters and agencies every month as a courtesy. Some of those introductions are to services that the companies would buy anyway. When the service is in the Random Income network, the courtesy can carry a commission, disclosed and on clear terms.
It also protects your time. You never own the vendor relationship, never manage implementation and never become the person blamed for a missed deadline. Random Income runs discovery, proposals, delivery and support, so a referral adds value to the company without adding work to your week. When an engagement ends, as fractional engagements do, any commission earned on what the company bought stays tracked in your back office.
What fits each fractional seat
The strongest referrals match the problems your seat owns. These are the most natural fits.
- Fractional CFO: Consulting with Jeff Cline for owners weighing a technology investment, and the Big Idea application at jeff-cline.com/idea for owners who want to see whether they qualify for a larger one.
- Fractional CMO: MoneyWords.org to find the highest-value money words in the market, Quuik to get the brand cited by AI answer engines, and FeatureMe for features across top publications.
- Fractional CRO or sales leader: Predictive Data for in-market signals in the CRM, vrtcls.marketing for intent-based outbound, and KeywordCalls for live high-intent phone calls.
- Fractional CTO or CIO: Fast Start to take a validated idea to an MVP in market, and the Joint Venture tech stack build for companies that need a full platform.
- Fractional COO: contacts.plus Business for relationship CRM and trusted referrals, and Smart Email from siimpler.com for onboarding and nurture.
Conflicts and disclosure inside an operating role
A fractional executive is closer to the decision than any outside adviser. You may hold budget authority, sit in board meetings or sign purchase orders. That makes disclosure non-negotiable.
Start with your engagement letter. Some prohibit compensation from vendors, and some require board or CEO approval for related-party arrangements. If you are placed through a fractional executive firm or agency, its contract may restrict outside referral income as well. Then disclose in writing to the person you report to, ideally before the vendor conversation begins, and recuse yourself from the buying decision where your role would otherwise approve it.
The cleanest pattern is to introduce, disclose and step back: let the CEO or another executive evaluate the proposal on its merits. This is general information, not legal advice; if your role carries fiduciary duties or you serve on a board, ask counsel before accepting any referral compensation.
A network that refers in both directions
The best fractional executive firms and collectives already share work among members. A Random Income profile gives you a way to add value to that network rather than just draw from it. You can send your share link to peers, upload referrals from a portfolio review, and see every click and quote request in your back office. Your profile page at randomincome.com/first-last is a simple, credible place to point people.
Some fractional leaders run lean practices with a fractional executive assistant who manages introductions and follow-ups. That works well here too, as long as you remain the person who decides whether a referral is a genuine fit. The time commitment stays small, closer to the 2-hour work week than another retainer.
Terms for fractional partners
Every Strategic Partner is a 1099 independent contractor, never an employee. Stack products pay a percentage of retail on redline, the price floor: 20% when a client buys entirely online untouched, 12% when an in-house Random Income rep works the deal, and pro-rata to redline if we negotiate.
Fast Start ($32,500 a month) and the Joint Venture build ($18,200 a month) pay your percentage only of the monthly SaaS fee actually collected, with no equity, no success-fee commission and no other upside. Investor-funded deals pay a one-time $5,000 referral fee. Business-posted offers pay 50% of what the business pays Random Income. We pay on the 21st of the month after we are paid, once your balance reaches $500, after you upload an ID and a W-9. You receive a 1099-NEC. Because commission is tied to what the company actually pays, your interests stay aligned with a service that genuinely works for the business, which is the only kind worth introducing.
