A part-time business development partner role for people who already have a day job

A part-time business development partner opens doors for a company on their own schedule and earns commission on the business that results, without becoming an employee or carrying a quota. It is built for people who already have a career and a network, not people looking for a second job with a second boss. At Random Income, that means you refer and our team does the selling.

Why business development job ads attract the wrong people

Post a part-time business development job and the applicants are mostly people who need a job: recent graduates, people between roles and career changers hoping for a foothold. They are often motivated and capable, but they rarely have the one thing business development actually runs on, which is trusted access to decision-makers. So the company hands them a list, a script and a quota, and the role turns into cold outreach.

The people who could open the best doors almost never apply. A VP of sales, a fractional CFO, an IT consultant or an association director is not scanning job boards for twenty-hour-a-week roles. They already have the job. What they would say yes to is a partnership: a clean way to introduce good clients to good offers, get paid when it works and never be managed.

That gap is why Random Income avoids business development job language altogether. We recruit partners, not part-time staff.

What an independent business development partner actually does

Strip business development to its core and it is three activities: noticing a need, making a credible introduction and following through enough that the introduction does not die. Selling, scoping, contracting and delivery are separate jobs. In a partner model, you keep the first three and hand off the rest.

For an independent business development consultant or manager, that division is liberating. You stop spending your scarce hours on proposals and pricing and spend them where you have an unfair advantage: in conversations with people who already trust you.

  • Listen for a problem in a meeting, call or dinner you were already having.
  • Ask permission to make an introduction, and disclose that you are compensated if it turns into business.
  • Share your link or upload the referral in your back office, singly or as a CSV.
  • Watch the activity on your referral, every click, form and quote request, and follow up only when it is useful.
  • Let Random Income's in-house team handle discovery, proposals, delivery and support.

Making it fit around a full-time role

We design the work around about two focused hours a week. That is not a promise about results; it is a design constraint that keeps business development side income from swallowing the career that makes it possible. Many partners block one short session to review back-office activity and one to send introductions, and let the rest happen inside conversations they would have anyway.

If you are employed, read your agreement and handbook before you start. Look for moonlighting, conflict-of-interest, non-solicitation and confidentiality clauses, and never refer your employer's customers to competing offers or use internal information. Licensed professionals should also check their board, firm or regulator on referral compensation and disclosure. This is general information, not legal advice; ask HR or your own attorney if anything is unclear.

What a month of part-time business development can look like

It helps to picture the rhythm. Here is a realistic, deliberately unglamorous month for a partner with a demanding day job.

In the first week, a client mentions over lunch that their sales team is calling cold lists and getting nowhere. You ask whether they would like to see who is actually in-market for what they sell, they say yes, and you send a two-line introduction with your share link and a disclosure that you are compensated if they buy. That takes about ten minutes.

In the second week, you spend a short session in your back office. Your referral has clicked through and filled out a form; a Random Income rep has scheduled a discovery call. There is nothing for you to do except reply to a thank-you note.

In the third and fourth weeks, nothing happens, and that is fine. You have a job. Sometimes a month brings two introductions and sometimes none. The point of the model is that the business development happens when your network presents a genuine need, not because a quota says it must.

The trade-offs, stated plainly

A part-time partner role is not a paycheck. Commission arrives only when a client buys and Random Income is paid, so income is irregular and some months bring nothing. There are no benefits and no withholding: Strategic Partners are 1099 independent contractors, never employees, and responsible for their own self-employment tax. If you need predictable income, a W2 role with a base salary is the better choice.

What you get is the opposite of a job: no manager, no quota, no territory, no fee to join, no inventory and no recruiting pyramid. You decide whether to refer at all in a given month. And because the selling is done by our team, your reputation is protected by a professional process rather than a rushed pitch.

How it pays

On stack products you earn a percentage of retail calculated on redline, the price floor: 20% when a client buys entirely online untouched, 12% when one of our in-house reps works the deal, and pro-rata to redline if we negotiate the price. For Fast Start ($32,500 a month) and the Joint Venture build ($18,200 a month), you earn your percentage only of the monthly SaaS fee collected, with no equity or success fee. Investor-funded deals pay a one-time $5,000 referral fee. Offers posted by businesses pay 50% of what the business pays Random Income.

Payouts go out on the 21st of the month after we are paid, once your balance is at least $500, after you upload an ID and a W-9. We issue a 1099-NEC each year.

Who makes a strong part-time partner

Sales leaders and chief revenue officers who see dozens of companies struggling with pipeline. Fractional executives who walk into a new business every quarter. CPAs, wealth advisors and insurance agents who know which clients are growing. IT and MSP owners who hear every technology complaint first. Recruiters and association leaders who sit in the middle of entire industries.

The common thread is that people already ask them for recommendations. The future is built on unique people and unique data, and those people are the unique part. If that is you, take the test about your traits and available hours, and our matching engine will show the opportunity that best fits your network.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a part-time business development partner?

It is someone who introduces potential clients to a company on their own schedule and earns commission on resulting sales, without being an employee. At Random Income, part-time business development partners refer only; in-house reps handle selling, delivery and support. There is no quota, no territory and no fee to join, and the work is designed for about two focused hours a week.

Can I do independent business development while employed full time?

Often yes, if your employer's policies allow it. Review your employment agreement and handbook for moonlighting, conflict-of-interest and non-solicitation rules, keep internal information out of it and never steer your employer's customers to competitors. Licensed professionals should also check their regulator. When in doubt, ask HR or an attorney before you make your first referral.

How much business development side income can I make?

It depends entirely on your network and the fit with the offers, so we do not forecast it. What we can state are the terms: 20% of retail on redline when a client buys online untouched, 12% when our rep works the deal, and 50% of what a business pays us on business-posted offers. Payouts start once your balance reaches $500.

Is an independent business development consultant an employee?

Not when the relationship is genuinely independent. An independent business development consultant controls how and when they work and is paid without withholding on a 1099-NEC. At Random Income every Strategic Partner is a 1099 independent contractor, never an employee. Classification depends on actual facts, and state rules can differ, so check with a tax professional.
