Why CPAs already sit at the center of the referral economy
Owners ask their accountant questions they ask nobody else. Why is revenue flat when we spent more on marketing? Should we hire a salesperson or buy software? Who do you use for this? You see the numbers behind the story every month or every quarter, so you know when a business is spending on growth that isn't working long before the owner admits it.
That is exactly the position a great referral partner needs: trusted, informed and close to the decision. Most CPAs already refer every week, to attorneys, bankers, insurance agents and payroll firms. Usually it is a favor. A referral partner program turns the best of those introductions into a second revenue line that runs alongside the practice, not instead of it.
Our thesis is simple: every industry is a geek away from being uberized, and accounting is no exception. Bookkeeping and tax preparation are being automated. The CPAs who thrive are moving toward advisory, and advisory is where clients ask for introductions.
What you would refer, and who on your client list buys it
Random Income connects the dots between brand partners and the professionals who know their buyers. For accountants, the strongest fits in our stack are the services your clients already ask about when they want to grow or cut waste.
- Predictive Data: shows a business who is in-market before competitors do, delivered into the CRM. A fit for sales-led clients whose acquisition costs keep rising.
- Consulting with Jeff Cline: executive strategy on technology, predictive analytics and AI for owners at an inflection point, such as a new location, a new product line or a sale.
- Quuik: gets a business cited when people ask AI and answer engines for what it sells. A fit for professional-service and local clients who notice that search is changing.
- contacts.plus Business: a business presence, trusted referrals and a relationship CRM for clients who grow by word of mouth.
- The Big Idea at jeff-cline.com/idea: an application for owners who want to see whether they qualify for a larger technology investment.
Disclosure, independence and the AICPA rules
Before you accept any referral compensation, check the rules that govern you. The AICPA Code of Professional Conduct addresses commissions and referral fees (ET 1.520). In general terms, it prohibits commissions when you perform certain attest services for the client, and where a referral fee or commission is permitted it must be disclosed to the client. State boards of accountancy can be stricter than the AICPA, and firm policies can be stricter still.
In practice, that means three habits. First, do not refer attest clients for compensation unless your counsel or state board confirms it is allowed. Second, disclose the relationship in writing every time, even when it feels obvious. Third, refer only when the service genuinely fits the client's situation; your recommendation is the asset, so protect it.
This is general information, not legal or ethics advice. If you are unsure, ask your state board or your firm's ethics resource before you start. Many partners simply include a short disclosure line in the introduction email, which keeps everything transparent for the client and for you.
How the referral partner program works for an accountant
The process is built for professionals who have about two hours a week, not twenty. You take a short test about your strengths and the hours you have, our matching engine shows you the opportunity that fits your profile, and you get your own profile page, share link and back office.
When a client mentions a problem one of our partners solves, you make the introduction with a link or by uploading the referral in your back office. From there, Random Income does the rest: discovery, proposal, delivery and support. You can see the activity on every referral you send, including what the lead clicks, so you know when a follow-up conversation is worth having.
- Take the test and get matched to the best-fit opportunity for your profile.
- Share your link or upload a referral with a disclosure note.
- Random Income sells, delivers and supports the client.
- Track every referral, click and quote request in your back office.
- Get paid once your balance reaches $500, on the 21st of the month after we are paid.
The commission terms, in plain English
Strategic Partners are 1099 independent contractors, never employees. On products in our stack you earn a percentage of retail, calculated on redline, the price floor. If a client buys entirely online without our team touching the deal, the commission is 20%. If an in-house Random Income rep has to work the deal, it is 12%. If we negotiate a lower price, your commission adjusts pro-rata to redline.
For our two premium programs, Fast Start ($32,500 a month) and the Joint Venture build ($18,200 a month), you earn your percentage only on the monthly fee we actually collect, with no equity, success fee or other upside. When a business posts its own offer on Random Income, you earn 50% of what that business pays us for the sale. Before your first payout you upload an ID and a W-9, and we issue a 1099-NEC. Talk to your own tax adviser about how the income fits your situation; you of all people know that the details matter.
Conversation starters that keep it professional
The best referrals never sound like a pitch. They sound like the advice you would give anyway, followed by a name. A few openings that work in a review meeting or a year-end planning call:
Your marketing line keeps growing, but revenue per customer is flat. Would it help to see who is actually in the market for what you sell before you spend more?
You mentioned customers now say they asked an AI tool for a recommendation. Do you know whether your firm shows up in those answers?
You are thinking about hiring a salesperson. Before you add a salary, would you like to talk to someone about data that tells the team who to call first?
If the answer is yes, you introduce, disclose and step back. If the answer is no, nothing changes in the relationship, which is exactly how it should be.
