What finance leaders see that nobody else does
A chief financial officer sees the business in its least flattering light. Marketing reports celebrate impressions and leads; the CFO sees that customer acquisition cost has crept up for six quarters in a row. Sales leaders talk about pipeline; the CFO sees that half of it never closes. The board hears about an AI initiative; the CFO sees the invoices from three vendors doing overlapping work.
Finance leaders also talk to each other. CFO roundtables, finance leadership councils, private equity operating partner groups and the informal network of former audit colleagues are full of the same complaint: we are spending more to grow less. When a peer asks how you fixed it, or who you trust, your answer carries the weight of someone who has read the contract, sat through the renewal and measured the result.
That makes CFOs unusually credible referral partners. You do not recommend tools because they are exciting. You recommend them because the numbers moved. And because every industry is a geek away from being uberized, the conversation about which spend still earns its keep is only getting louder.
Products that lower acquisition cost
Random Income connects the dots between brand partners, the businesses with offers, and the people who already know their buyers. For finance leaders, the most natural referrals are the ones that make growth spending more efficient:
Finance leaders tend to ask the same diligence questions of any vendor, and they are good questions to pass along. What is the measurable outcome, and over what period? What does it cost per month, and what is the exit? Who owns the data at the end? Random Income's team answers those in discovery, so your introduction can simply say that the peer should ask them. A CFO's referral that arrives with the right questions attached is more useful than any glowing endorsement, and it keeps your own judgment visibly independent.
- Predictive Data: tells a business who is in-market before it spends, with identity append, visitor identification and ZIP-level predictive data delivered into the CRM. The finance case is fewer wasted touches per customer won.
- MoneyWords.org: maps the highest-value money words in a market to the offer, with a first predictive dataset, so paid search budgets go where buyers actually are.
- vrtcls.marketing: intent-based outbound email in which every click makes the next send smarter, replacing broad list buys.
- Consulting with Jeff Cline: executive strategy on technology, predictive analytics and AI, for leadership teams that need to rationalize a sprawling stack.
- Fast Start and Joint Venture: for companies that should build rather than rent, with clear monthly pricing at $32,500 and $18,200 respectively.
Independence, procurement and the CPA rules
Finance leaders hold positions of trust over company money, which makes conflicts of interest especially sensitive. Three rules keep a fractional CFO referral or a sitting CFO's introduction clean.
Never refer to your own employer for personal compensation. If your company should buy something in our stack, buy it through normal procurement with no commission. A finance chief who is paid for steering company spending creates exactly the related-party problem auditors are trained to find. Many public companies also maintain a code of ethics for senior financial officers; read yours.
Keep vendor decisions and referral activity separate. If you have authority over vendor selection anywhere, whether as an employee, a fractional CFO or a board audit committee member, do not refer into that organization without written approval and full disclosure.
If you are a licensed CPA, the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct addresses commissions and referral fees (ET 1.520). In general terms, it prohibits commissions for clients receiving certain attest services and requires disclosure where commissions are permitted. State boards can be stricter.
This is general information, not legal or ethics advice. Your general counsel, audit committee chair or state board is the right authority to confirm how these rules apply to you.
Conversations a CFO can open without pitching
The best finance-led referrals sound like analysis, not sales. A few openings that fit naturally into a peer conversation or a fractional client review:
Your cost per acquired customer keeps rising while win rates stay flat. Have you looked at whether the team is reaching people who are actually in the market right now?
You are paying for three tools that each claim to find leads. Would it help to talk to someone about replacing the guesswork with predictive data?
Your board wants an AI plan and the leadership team is debating vendors. Would an outside view on technology strategy help before you commit budget?
If the answer is yes, send a short disclosed introduction and step back. Random Income handles discovery, proposals, delivery and support. If the answer is no, nothing changes.
Two hours a week around the close calendar
Finance work runs on a calendar of closes, forecasts and board cycles. Referral work should fit into the quiet spaces. About two focused hours a week is enough, and close weeks can be skipped entirely.
A simple rhythm: keep a running note of peer conversations where spending problems came up. Once a week, outside close, send one or two introductions with a disclosure line. Then review your back office, which shows every click, form and quote request on your referrals, and commission tracking on each. Your free contacts.plus upgrade keeps the relationship history organized.
Terms a finance leader can audit
Strategic Partners are 1099 independent contractors, never employees. Stack products pay a percentage of retail calculated on redline, the price floor: 20% when the client buys entirely online untouched, 12% when an in-house Random Income rep works the deal, and pro-rata to redline when we negotiate. Fast Start and Joint Venture pay your percentage only of the monthly SaaS fee actually collected, with no equity, no success fee and no other upside. Investor-funded deals pay a one-time $5,000 referral fee. Business offers pay 50% of what the business pays us.
Payouts run on the 21st of the month after Random Income is paid, once your balance reaches $500, by Stripe or PayPal. You upload an ID and a W-9 before the first payout, and we issue a 1099-NEC. Become a Strategic Partner once your compliance questions are settled.
